WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO GRIP MY HANDGUN?

The grip is an essential component of the Basic Fundamentals of Marksmanship. A proper grip leads to better accuracy and fewer malfunctions. Here are some key points to consider when gripping a semi-automatic handgun:

  • Hand Positioning: The shooting hand should be high on the backstrap and against the dovetail for optimal control and stability.

  • Shooting Hand: The shooting hand accounts for about 40% of the grip. Its primary role is to hold the gun securely.

  • Support Hand: The support hand should provide 60% of the grip, offering additional stability and control. Proper placement of the support hand is wrapped over the fingers of the shooting hand, with the meaty portion of the thumbs as close together near the back of the grip as possible

  • Thumb Placement: Thumbs should be positioned on the same side of the pistol, with the thumb of the shooting hand locked down over the thumb of the non-shooting hand, to ensure a consistent grip.

  • Trigger Finger: Keep the trigger finger off the trigger and along the frame of the gun until you are ready to fire to maintain safety.

There are other gripping techniques that have been used, such as the "teacup" grip. However, this has proven to be the most stable and accurate one to use over time.

When you incorporate the proper grip with the other components of marksmanship, you will have consistently better shot placement and less fatigue when practicing.

I have included a video by Ken Scott, with the Provectus Group, one of the Right to Bear Instructors, showing how to get the proper grip. He teaches nearly the exact same way we do at 901 Firearms Training.
